Trauma Therapy Modalities
Trauma Focused - Cognitive Behavioral Therapy - This treatment challenges and redirects cognitions and behaviors to establish safety and stabilization, utilizes exposure to decrease reactivity, and meaningfully integrates trauma narrative.
Emotion Focused Therapy - This approach guides clients to identify, experience, tolerate, and make decisions based on their emotions. This therapy is for people who lack emotional awareness, experience numbing and dissociation, and experience avoidance of inner experience. Through EFT clients can experience increased awareness and acceptance of their emotions and decreased avoidance behavior that perpetuates interpersonal difficulties.
Attachment Focused Therapy/Psychodynamic Therapy - Operating under the theory that our early relationships in life set the mental and emotional framework for our present and future relationships, attachment focused therapy addresses negative beliefs about self, others, the world, trust, and emotional expression. This therapy attempts to build a trusting and supportive relationship between the therapist and client to heal from past non-nurturing, neglectful, or abusive experiences from earlier in life.
Internal Family Systems/Parts Work - IFS suggests that the mind is made up of multiple parts, and underlying them is a person's core or true Self. Like members of a family, a person's inner parts can take on extreme roles or subpersonalities. Each part has its own perspective, interests, memories, and viewpoint. A core tenet of IFS is that every part has a positive intent, even if its actions are counterproductive and/or cause dysfunction. IFS therapy aims to heal wounded parts and restore mental balance. The first step is to access the core Self and then, from there, understand the different parts in order to heal them.
Brainspotting - Brainspotting is a brain-based trauma treatment modality that utilizes emotion-triggering points in the visual field as a means to access, experience, release, and heal emotional wounds. During brainspotting, waves of emotion are often experienced by the client until they naturally dissipate. The therapist attunes with the client offering support and validation of the client’s experience during the intervention. This is an ideal therapy for clients who have suffered from childhood trauma who may not have complete or specific memories, but instead struggle with emotions generated from their experience. Schedule a consultation with Carrie or Tori to learn what brainspotting could do for your recovery.
Accelerated Resolution Therapy - An evidence-based, eye-movement reprocessing therapy, ART is designed to reduce and replace emotions and sensations from traumatic memories while incorporating a meaningful, adaptive narrative. ART utilizes desensitization, rescripting, mindfulness, resource building, and narrative therapy components. This is an ideal modality for clients who struggle with specific traumatic memories looking for immediate relief. Schedule a consultation with Tori to learn if ART is appropriate for you.
